Biking in and around Houston

[Current Music |The White Stripes - Death Letter]

Created this community because I think there is a decent interest in cycling around Houston as a whole.  There are a few places to get information, but I know a HUGE amount of people read LJ, so I wanted to create an outlet here as well.

My intro:  I commute on bike to work on most days.  It is about 9 miles one-way and takes me about 45 minutes on average.  Most of the route is on the paved paths of the Braes Bayou hike/bike trail, so it is definitely not as stressful to ride in as it could be.
I also *love* to ride the dirt.  I have a Motobecane Fantom 29er that I ride often at either Memorial Park or The Anthills.  We haven't ventured too far outside of the city for trails, but will probably do so soon.

websites of interest:
www.GHORBA.org - Greater Houston Off Road Biking Association
www.theanthills.com - website (including forum) for The Anthills

those are the two I frequent, though I do occassionally check out a couple of others.

Post about your rides (current and past) and especially if you want new riding buddies!!

Glad to see this community...my husband and I are new to Houston and are slowly figuring out where to ride. Well, I am -- he is content to ride circles at the Picnic Loop all night. Also, he doesn't have a mountain bike, so I haven't been on mine in forever. I need to change that. I have been considering joining the GHORBA Girls Yahoo group and begging someone to be my friend. ;)

haha. in contrast, my husband HATES riding pavement and only goes out when we can ride the dirt.

what part of town are you in? over at theanthills.com we have the Dirt Girls...we try to get together for a ride at least once a month, but it all depends on weather and such.

normally on weekdays we try to get out to memorial for the trails (pending conditions, of course) and hit the anthills on the weekends (due to traffic). i am always up for new riding buddies. :)

I'm between Washington Ave and I-10, but I work in the office park next to Terry Hershey. I'm definitely interested in making some riding friends. What is the terrain like at each place? My old haunt in NJ had a little of everything but my technical skills are probably very rusty.

Both are singletrack trails. Memorial has a few options with the red/yellow/orange/blue being the easiest by far. There are a couple of gullies that are kind of sketchy for n00bs, but if you are a previous rider, you should be fine. Green is a bit harder, but its what i started on out there so i love it. then there is the triangle area that i havent gone into...check out http://www.memorialparkconservancy.org/index.cfm/CFID/30255365/CFTOKEN/94583091/MenuItemID/116.htm
The triangle is in the upper left. The green is on the right side of the picnic loop. the spots near the rugby field are the other colors. the ones by the arboretum (south of it) are still there, but supposed to be closed off to bikers.

Anthills is pretty technical in spots. right now it is "under construction" in that we are working to clear it and get new trail cut since the city doesnt maintain it. it is still mostly ridable, but if you dont know about the new trails (not broken in yet) you will be walking a fair amount to get around debris.

i hail from just outside the loop on 59 (near the galleria) so we arent too far from one another. :) Next time we plan to head out to MP, i will hit you up on here to let you know.

My name is Jenn and I love to ride! I used to work @ Whole Foods and while I was there my bike was my only mode of transport and I LOVED IT! Now I work at a salon on W Gray (White) and go to school at I-10 and the beltway so I can only ride at night or on the weekends. I'm always on the lookout for new people to who love long rides through the city @ night or whatever..I'm down! Oh yeah I live in Montrose and have a no name mountain bike that I beat the hell out of so I like trails too
